Papers include writings, correspondence and subject files. Writings consist of undated autobiographical pieces, articles, verses, journals, and notes. The journals are of particular interest because they describe settlement work in New York and New Haven, CT, 1900-1905. There are two typescripts on African Americans and segregation (1959); and a published article on Susan B. Anthony (1956). Correspondence includes descriptive letters to her parents and letters from settlement friends; letters from Sadie Rubin, an inmate at the New York State Reformatory for Women; and members of the Laureate Literary Society which Kitchelt founded and directed and was associated with the Rivington treet settlement house. The Subject series contains photographs, clippings, and memorabilia.

Florence Ledyard Cross Kitchelt was born in Rochester, New York, on December 17, 1874, and died in Wilberforce, Ohio, on April 4, 1961. Kitchelt's activities included work as a social worker, settlement house worker, and suffragette organizer in New York, and as a peace activist in Connecticut.
